A chapter in the book discusses the reactions of monastic religious orders, especially the Benedictines and Cistercians, to the religious propaganda and art of the Jesuits. Using specific examples, it shows that these orders were inspired by the new visual culture of the Society of Jesus, and sought to use the newly introduced imagery to promote their own religious and political interests.
