The first part of the review essay summarises B. Earley’s chapters on the influence of Thucydides on F. M. Cornford, A. E. Zimmern, G. F. Abbott, A. J. Toynbee, and J. E. Powell. Earley believes that there was a profound change in the scholarly understanding of Thucydides because of the First World War. Even if true, this was not universal by way of an example, I adduce the unchanging picture of Thucydides in the writings of G. Murray. I also critically discuss several of Earley’s points in the Epilogue, which deals with American reception of Thucydides. Overall, the book is valuable in pointing to numerous writings influenced by Thucydides, but it contains far too many factual errors to be a reliable guide to the reception of Thucydides in the first half of the 20th century in the United Kingdom.
