All the catalytic automotive exhaust gas aftertreatment devices share similar shape and operation principle. They are made of numerous parallel channels in a honeycomb arrangement. Catalytic converters are flow-through devices, while catalytic filters (CF) are plugged at the alternate ends. An overall performance of the exhaust gas aftertreatment devices is strongly dependent on the catalytic material distribution within it. The goal of the present work is to devise a tool to study dependence of the CF characteristics on its geometry, inlet gas properties or catalyst distribution. Such a tool comprises a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) framework coupling mass, momentum and heat transport inside the catalytic devices. The developed framework was verified against a surrogate (1+1)D XPF model calibrated on experimental data. Furthermore, we show capabilities of the new framework on laboratory scale simulations.
