Adults acquiring a new language face the challenge of segmenting the stream of running speech sounds into words. In achieving this, different cues to word boundaries interact, including prosodic cues (syllable prominence) and statistical cues, such as transitional probabilities (TPs) between syllables (higher within and lower between words) and phonotactic probabilities (PPs). Despite extensive research, e.g. [1-4], it remains unclear how much segmentation depends on language-specific biases versus universal perceptual tendencies. Comparing the performance of adults with different first-language backgrounds can therefore be revealing.
