The chapter is a part of a comparative analysis of cultural concepts, medicalisation as well as political strategies dealing with alcohol consumption and alcoholism in Europe, Asia and America. It argues that in the case of communist Czechoslovakia, 1948-1989, issues of power – in political, surveillance, and institutional sense - are the key factor that has to be taken into account along with medical, social, and cultural meanings and content.
