The main aim of the paper is the discussion on different concepts on the classification of non-dominant diatopic lects. The study treats and compares different definitions proposed both by scholars and local legislative bodies. The author confronts the definitions of Normaldialect and Ausbaudialekt by H. Kloss with Duličenko’s concept of literary microlanguages, the notions of contested and collateral languages with different understandings of minority and regional languages including their variants. The text is enriched with numerous examples from the present and past of the non-dominant diatopic lects of Europe.
