The text deals with the specific single-party system within the communist dictatorship in Czechoslovakia, 1948-1989. The duality of a complex pillar of government institutions next to an all-encompassing Communist Party structure is interpreted as an efficient and stabilizing principle, which enabled the Party to re-direct attention to the governmental pillar in case of crises.
