Politické strany jsou nutné v rámci politického zápasu, kde soupeření o hlasy voličů vyžaduje velké množství organizační práce a také různorodé specializace, což je úkol přesahující síly jednoho člověka. Smysl politických stran se však neomezuje pouze na organizace předvolebních kampaní a vytváření programu. Strany vstupují do veřejného prostoru, kde jsou prostředníkem mezi státem na jedné straně a společností na straně druhé. Jejich úspěch závisí na srozumitelném vyjadřování zájmů a názorů jednotlivých občanů. Nejsou však jen pasivními přejímateli veřejného mínění – svými postoji, argumenty a činy se samy aktivně podílejí na jeho vytváření. Strany a jejich regionální struktury rovněž plní důležitou roli při objevování a výchově budoucích politiků. V neposlední řadě také umožňují, aby se v politické reprezentaci moderních společností odrážela jejich vnitřní pluralita, a to takovým způsobem, který tyto společnosti neparalyzuje při politickém rozhodování.


Political parties are necessary in a political struggle where competition for votes requires a great deal of organizational work as well as diverse specialization, which is a task beyond the power of any one person. However, the purpose of political parties is not limited to the organisation of election campaigns and the creation of a programme. Parties are entering into the public sphere, where they mediate between the state on the one hand and society on the other. Their success depends on the clear expression of the interests and opinions of individual citizens. But they are not just passive recipients of public.They are not just passive recipients of public opinion, but actively participate in shaping it through their attitudes, arguments and actions. Parties and their regional structures also play an important role in exploring and educating future politicians. Last but not least, they also enable the political representation of modern societies to reflect their internal pluralism in a way that in a way that does not paralyse these societies in political decision-making.
