The paper focused on how to extend the reach of human rights to not yet born future persons. It first summarized the main objections that are usually raised against human rights of future people. Then it addressed the question of whether the international environmental or climate law treaties enshrine rights (or interests) of future generations. Finally, it outlined four approaches offered by authors to derive the rights of future generations: the interest theory of human rights, intergenerational equity, establishing mutual rights and duties within overlapping generations or within a community, and applying law principles such as non-discrimination and precaution.
