During its history Hainan several times changed its Chinese name, but in Western sources and maps it still remained mostly as Hainan. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Western explorers referred to the island as “Aynam”, which remains the pronunciation of its name in the local Hainanese dialect. The most prominent in modern history was "Qiongya", the name "Hainan" was returned to this island only in 1950, when it was liberated and became a part of the PRCh.
