Konec 17. a celé 18. století bývají v dějinách Tchaj­ -wanu opomíjeny, neboť šlo o období konfliktů mezi čínskými etniky a domorodými obyvateli. Právě ve druhé polovině 18. století však na ostrov zavítal hrabě Móric Beňovský. Popularita jeho dobrodružství byla spojena se vzmáhajícím se imperialismem doby osvícenství, kdy evropské říše upíraly pohled na nové kolonie. Zkazky o exotických zemích podporované nakladatelskými domy bavily městkou společnost. Článek se zaměřuje jak na popisovaný pobyt, tak i jeho ohlasy v pozdějším období.

The end of the 17th and the whole of the 18th century tend to be neglected in the history of Taiwan, as it was a period of conflict between ethnic Chinese and indigenous people. It was in the second half of the 18th century that Count Maurice Benyowsky visited the island. The popularity of his adventures was linked to the growing imperialism of the Age of Enlightenment when European empires fixed their gaze towards new colonies. News about exotic countries supported by publishing houses amused urban society. The article focuses both on the described stay and its echoes in the later period.
