We report unusually high diversity in egg morphology in a group of fishes called bitterling. We found strikingly greater interspecific variation in egg shape in bitterlings than the “other cyprinid” species . We propose that the greater variation in egg shape seen in bitterlings arises as an outcome of their unusual spawning relationship with freshwater mussels.
