A hundred years ago, the last comprehensive treatment of Hieracium, a predominantly apomictic polyploid genus, was published. It includes native American species that are diploid and distributed all over the New World, they were very poorly investigated so far. We apply a broad range of molecular markers, infer their relationships and the timing of speciation events. South American native hawkweeds are being investigated genetically for the first time. Our study covers the fields of plant systematics, plant phylogeny, taxonomy and classification, and evolutionary biology. It represents a big step forward in the understanding of an understudied plant group and provides a sound basis for future work.
