Tato kapitola se zabývá problematikou lidské důstojnosti v kontextu moderní bioetiky. Podrobně analyzuje různé významy slova „důstojnost“ a teorie lidské důstojnosti, které nacházíme v moderní odborné literatuře. Výsledkem analýzy je skepticismus: i kdybychom se dokázali shodnout na významu důstojnosti a přijali filosofické předpoklady její atribuce, stále nám scházejí jasné principy, jakým způsobem z lidské důstojnosti odvozovat konkrétní normativní závěry. Není proto překvapivé, že se na důstojnost odvolávají zastánci i odpůrci eutanazie.

This chapter deals with the issue of human dignity in the context of modern bioethics. It analyses in detail the different meanings of the word „dignity“ and the theories of human dignity found in the modern literature. The result of the analysis is skepticism: even if we can agree on the meaning of dignity and accept the philosophical assumptions of its attribution, we still lack clear principles on how to derive concrete normative conclusions from human dignity. It is therefore not surprising that dignity is invoked by both proponents and opponents of euthanasia.
