The subject of the functional sample is a heat exchanger rig, which serves for evaluation of overall thermal performance of nanofluids. The thermal performance is evaluated by means of comparative experiments conducted in the heat exchanger rig. The main part of the experimental rig is a pair of concentric-tube measuring heat exchangers (HEX). A tested nanofluid flows in turbulent regime through the “primary circuit” formed by the inner sides of the measuring HEXes connected in series. Between the HEXes, an electrical heater is installed, which can be set to an accurate heating power digitally. The primary circuit is driven by a gear pump whose revolutions are controlled in a closed loop to maintain the volumetric flow rate. After exiting the gear pump, the tested fluid flows through an auxiliary heat exchanger removing heat produced by the pump. In this way, we circumvent the effect of imperfection of the pump depending on its particular type. Outer sides of the measuring HEXes are connected in “secondary circuits” including refrigerated thermostatic baths, digitally controlled centrifugal pumps providing high flow rates, and flow meters with pulsed output. The whole experimental rig is equipped with accurate temperature and pressure sensors located at inlet and outlet of each HEX and near the flow meters. The temperature, pressure, and flow rate readings are sampled by a data acquisition device and stored in a measuring PC. The measured data enable to evaluate the transferred heat, net mechanical energy dissipated in HEXes, heat transfer coefficients, coefficients of performance, and other quantities allowing to compare the results of one fluid with another.
