Publikace zaplňuje citelnou mezeru odborné literatury k osvojování podnětů starého Řecka a Říma v českém novodobém umění. Oborově zahrnuje tvorbu od sochařství po fotografii, okrajově i užité umění a architekturu. V patnácti kapitolách pojednává souhrnně i v detailu „přímé“ inspirace antickými díly, zejména sochařství, a odkazuje i na zprostředkování následujícími klasicismy. Hlavní důraz však klade na způsoby ztvárnění prvků antické mytologie charakteristické ve střídavých poměrech novodobé umělecké scény. Publikace přináší nový přístup k tématu: všímá si mimo jiné toho, čím byly kdy výtvarné odezvy na antiku v českém prostředí příznačné nebo i relativně ojedinělé. Je vybavena bohatou obrazovou přílohou.

The publication fills a noticeable gap in the literature on the adoption of the impulses of ancient Greece and Rome in Czech modern art. It covers works ranging from sculpture to photography, and marginally also applied art and architecture. In fifteen chapters, it discusses in summary and in detail the „direct“ inspiration of ancient works, especially sculpture, and refers also to the mediation by the following classical art. The main emphasis, however, is on the ways in which the elements of ancient mythology characteristic of the alternate conditions of the modern art scene are portrayed. The publication brings a new approach to the topic: it notes, among other things, what has ever made artistic responses to antiquity characteristic or even relatively unique in the Czech environment. It is equipped with a rich pictorial appendix.
