Water and ethanol-based suspensions both containing 40 wt.% of yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG, Y3Al5O12) were sprayed using high enthalpic hybrid argon-water stabilized plasma torch (WSP-H, ProjectSoft, Czech Republic). External suspension feeding system was employed in this study. Feeding conditions (in particular feeding pressure) were adjusted using Spraycam shadowgraphy laser system in order to achieve optimal suspension trajectory in the plasma jet. Different fragmentation character of liquid stream penetrating into the plasma jet was observed for water-and ethanol-based suspensions, which resulted in different particles thermal treatment during interaction with plasma jet and notable differences in the coating microstructures. Effects of substrate preheating, choice of substrate material and its surface finish on the coating microstructure were also studied. Obtained results show that columnar as well as dense coatings microstructures can be obtained by suspension plasma spraying of YAG with WSP-H technology.
