Recenze posuzuje kolektivní monografii Popular Music in Communist and Post-Communist Europe, vydanou vydavatelstvím Peter Lang. Zasazuje ji do kontextu edice „Jazz under State Socialism“, zaměřené na výzkum jazzu a populární hudby v bývalých komunistických zemích střední a východní Evropy. Každé z 24 kapitol věnuje autor recenze podrobný komentář nebo alespoň stručnější zhodnocení. Závěrem konstatuje, že publikace nevyčerpává široké téma, dané jejím názvem, shrnuje nesourodé pohledy a přístupy, avšak přináší užitečnou sumu znalostí a informací, propojujících zkušenosti z různých žánrů i regionů. Kniha, i díky zvolenému anglickému jazyku, přispívá k hlubšímu vzájemnému poznávání výzkumů v zemích střední a východní Evropy i k přesnějšímu povědomí o daném tématu ve světě.

The article reviews the collective monograph Popular Music in Communist and Post-Communist Europe, published by Peter Lang within the edition ʺJazz under State Socialismʺ, which focuses on research into jazz and popular music in the former communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Each of the 24 chapters of the book is given a detailed commentary or at least a brief evaluation. The reviewer concludes that the publication does not exhaust the broad topic given by its title, it summarizes inconsistent views and approaches, but it brings a useful amount of knowledge and information, connecting experiences from different genres and regions. The book, also thanks to the chosen English, contributes to a deeper mutual knowledge of research in the Central and Eastern European countries and to the refinement of knowledge about the topic in the world.
