The excellent mechanical properties of modern materials, such as advanced high strength steels and light metals, are determined by their microstructure. Thus, correct microstructural characterization is crucial for understanding of the structure‑properties relationship and further development of these unique materials. Recently, scanning electron microscopes (SEM) have sophisticated multiple detection systems enabling effective angular and energy filtration of the detected signal. Filtered SEM micrographs enable us to intensify the desired contrast and/or to suppress undesirable information about the specimen. Moreover, the modern SEMs can be operated at extremely low landing energies, even units of eV, which opens a new world of contrast mechanisms. In the presentation, we will demonstrate advanced SEM imaging as a powerful tool for characterization of modern materials.
