Topology optimization (TO) has come to the fore in recent years, especially with the development of 3D printing. Finite element systems often include TO functionality based on either
density-based or level set methods. In the case of the first-mentioned method, the results of TO are further processed into geometry suitable for additive manufacturing. However, current
programs only include basic post-processing capabilities with minimal customization options. This paper will first briefly summarize the theoretical background of TO and post-processing
methods. Next, selected commercial TO programs will be compared from the perspective of shape post-processing. The final part will be devoted to applying the level set method for shape
post-processing of a topologically optimized industrial robot gripper.
