Článek seznamuje s paleontologickou historií, morfologií, biologií, rozšířením a současným stavem populací veslonosů – ryb čeledi Polyodontidae. Poukazuje na taxonomicky rozrůzněné fosilní druhy veslonosů a na recentní dva druhy, z nichž veslonos čínský (Psephurus gladius), údajně největší sladkovodní ryby, vymizel v současné době po roce 2000 a je považován za vymřelého. V této souvislosti se článek zabývá příčinami této neblahé události a poukazuje na nebezpečí vyhynutí dalších velkých druhů sladkovodních ryb.

The article introduces the paleontological history, morphology, biology, distribution and current state of populations of oars - fish of the family Polyodontidae. He points to taxonomically diverse fossil species of oars and to the recent two species, of which the Chinese oyster (Psephurus gladius), reportedly the largest freshwater fish, has now disappeared after 2000 and is considered extinct. In this context, the article deals with the causes of this unfortunate event and points to the danger of extinction of other large species of freshwater fish.
