Básník, prozaik, esejista a dramatik Zdeněk Rotrekl (1920 – 2013) byl významným představitelem české literatury dvacátého století. Osud, genezi i recepci jeho díla zásadním a dramatickým způsobem ovlivnily dějinné okolnosti. Jako oponent komunistického režimu strávil dlouhá léta ve vězení a i po návratu byl po většinu času persona non grata a nepublikovatelný autor. Byl v úplné míře rehabilitován a získal uznání teprve po listopadu 1989. Monografie Aristokrat katakomb zobrazuje Rotrekla jako typického moderního básníka, zaměřeného na možnosti jazyka jako zdroje významu a imaginace. Rotreklova poezie hledá vztah mezi existenciálním a duchovním, mezi všedním a mýtickým a religiózním. Zkoumá hranice řeči i víry v neustálém pohybu inspirace. Lidský prostor vztahuje k prožívaným i uplynulým dějinám se vší jejich různorodostí, kulturním bohatstvím a pluralitou i osobně zakoušenou tragičností. Proti krutosti tupé politické moci a absurditě a vyprázdněnosti ideologie klade důraz na odpovědnost individuální angažovanosti a sdílení nadčasových duchovních hodnot. Rotrekl představuje a tematizuje svoje psaní jako znak nekonečné složitosti bytí a stále se táže po podstatě a smyslu poezie i neuchopitelné specifičnosti lidského pobývání ve světě. Součástí jeho díla je i autobiografický román Světlo přichází potmě, svébytný jazykový a formální experiment, vydávající svědectví o údělu umělce a intelektuála vzdorujícího tlaku nepřátel svobody a lidskosti. Pozoruhodnou úroveň má i několik autorových rozhlasových her. Rotreklova esejistická tvorba se snaží o uchování paměti a hodnot souvisejících s tradicí, kontinuitou, konzervativním řádem a hluboce prožívanou křesťanskou spiritualitou.

The poet, novelist, essayist and playwright Zdeněk Rotrekl (1920 - 2013) was an important representative of Czech literature of the twentieth century. The fate, genesis and reception of his work were influenced by historical circumstances in a fundamental and dramatic way. Being an opponent of the communist regime, he spent many years in prison and even after his return he was a persona non grata, an author whose work was not allowed to be published most of the time. He was fully rehabilitated and gained recognition only after November 1989. The monograph The Aristocrat of the Catacombs depicts Rotrekl as a typical modern poet, focusing on the possibilities of language as a source of meaning and imagination. Rotrekl's poetry seeks the relationship between the existentialist and the spiritual, between the ordinary on one hand and the mythical and the religious on the other. It explores the boundaries of speech and faith in constant movement of inspiration. It relates human space to history, which is both past and being experienced, with all its diversity, cultural richness and plurality, as well as personally suffered tragedy. In contrast to the cruelty of dull political power and the absurdity and emptiness of ideology, it emphasizes the responsibility of individual commitment and the sharing of timeless spiritual values. Rotrekl presents and thematizes his writing as a sign of the infinite complexity of being and still asks about the essence and meaning of poetry and the incomprehensible specificity of human habitation in the world. His work also includes the autobiographical novel Light Comes in the Dark, an original linguistic and formal experiment bearing witness to the fate of the artist and intellectual who resists the pressure of the enemies of freedom and humanity. Several of the author's radio plays have a remarkable level, too. Rotrekl's essay work strives to preserve the memory and values ​​associated with tradition, continuity, conservative order, and deeply lived Christian spirituality.
