The paper (chapter) attempts to provide a brief sketch of Roman Jakobson’s notion of metalanguage. It is discussed from two main standpoints, the first of which is called “the communicative metalanguage” and is derived from Jakobson’s communication model, while the latter is called “the scientific metalanguage” and is based on Jakobson’s idea regarding principles underlying the concept of sign. Both approaches are interconnected and exhibit the shared idea of semioticiation of knowledge, ultimately united in Jakobson’s brief proposal of the universal semiotic matrix.
