This chapter shows how public institutions in the Czech Republic blend paternalistic and neoliberal arguments and appeals, thereby engendering a specific mode of discursive household financialization. Focusing on discursive artefacts (websites and parliament speeches) on household finance produced by public institutions (the Czech National Bank, the Ministry of Finance) and representatives of political parties, the chapter develops two arguments. The first argument explores modes of construction of various subject categories that figure in this discourse: households, families, individuals, consumers and citizens. The second argument delves deeper into the normative content of this discursive production and relates it to the semi-peripheral character of the Czech economy and financial system and its structural and legal characteristics.
