The paper characterises the Old Czech adjectives přěsný/přiesný and přísný. It establishes their semantic structure and describes their semantic and formal progression in Old Czech based on analysis of attestations thereof, pointing out systemic relationships in the lexical families at whose centre these words stand, as well as in the broader context with the presumed situation in Proto-Slavic. The results of the analysis are both confirmations and corrections of the existing etymological interpretations. It also follows from the description of the development of relations between the lexical units under investigation that the peripheral adjective přísný partially merged with the adjective přěsný/přiesný thanks to intersection of meaning and great formal similarity (after systemic phonological changes had taken place, complete agreement). Though an unambiguous correlation between the forms and meanings of the lexical units under investigation cannot be proven from the extant written sources, a tendency was also found distinguishing the meanings ‘unfermented’ with the form přesný and ‘strict’ with the form přísný in the later stages of Old Czech.
