Some of the names for cardinal directions and winds are both of Slavonic origin and also usually have (pan-)Slavonic occurrence, starting with Old Church Slavonic. Despite this, we only register them in Early Modern Czech (though they infrequently occur in Old Czech, but having a different meaning). The reason for their later incorporation into the lexical system can only be explained satisfactorily as discontinuous, namely as the result of access by humanistic scholars to literary sources in other languages. Due to this we also note the difference in what systemic relationship these lexemes have to semantically different Old Czech forms and what relationship they have to semantically consistent Old Church Slavonic lexemes.
