Vnímání krajin odráží v historických pramenech zápas o existenci, moc a ovládnutí prostoru, tvůrčí činnost člověka (a společnosti), jeho myšlení a ideje. Promítání obrazu krajin do široké škály psaných, mapových či obrazových děl, průvodců, vzpomínek, pamětí, korespondence, pověstí a dalších prací svědčí nejen o dokumentování měnícího se obrazu krajin, ale často i o jeho cíleném předávání dalším generacím. Raně novověké popisy jednotlivých zemí a regionů rozšiřovaly dobový geografický horizont a jsou označovány jako topografické a historickogeografické prameny.

In historical sources, the perception of landscapes reflects a struggle for existence, power and control of the space, the man's creative activity, his thinking and ideas. The projection of the picture of a landscape into a wide range of sources documents the changing image of the landscapes with the goal of passing it to the future generations. The descriptions of the individual lands and regions simultaneously extended the contemporary geographical horizon. The presented text concentrates on selected written narrative materials of the late European Middle Ages and early modern times that can be characterized as topographical and historical geographic sources.
