We present the latest results on the enhancement of the photoluminescence in ZnO nano-columns after plasma hydrogenation. The photoluminescence in near UV region (peak at 380 nm) has been enhanced by several orders of magnitude whereas the deep defect related yellow photoluminescence (broad band 550-600 nm) has been significantly decreased. We explain the observed phenomena by passivation of defects at grain boundaries that not only decrease the defect related photoluminescence but it also significantly prolongs the lifetime of excitons and thus increasing the UV photoluminescence. The defects were also detected by the optical absorption spectroscopy and the electron paramagnetic resonance.
