If the corneal damage is very extensive and the limbal stem cell (LSC) region is involved, it can lead to LSC defficiency. The only way to treat LSC defficiency is transplantation of stem cells. To fix stem cells onto the ocular surface, various types of carriers have been tested. Promising scaffolds for growth and transfer of stem cells have been provided by nanotechnology. To produce nanofibers, the electrospinning technology was used. The great advantage of this technique is the possibility to define the properties of nanofiber scaffolds, optimal for growth and transfer of stem cells.
