Painting on stone became a typical element of late Renaissance and Mannerist visual art, which tended to push beyond existing limits in the choice of subjects and composition and the very execution. The new painting techniques on previously unusual materials were connected to an interest in all that was uncommon. Therefore, these paintings were a part of Emperor Rudolf II's Kunstkammer at the Prague Castle and reflected a wide scale of his interests in alchemy, mineralogy, painting, and other arts. For alchemy, the symbol of stone was fundamental because it was an intersection of its spiritual and material aspects.
