This paper deals with how extant hypotheses of the emergence and spread of Slavic can be classified into the scenarios distinguished in the model of Indo-Europeanization developed by Stefan Zimmer. It focuses mainly on the theories assuming the development and functioning of Slavic as a koiné or lingua franca.
