Thermotropic liquid crystals (LCs) are materials which form organized supramolecular structures (mesophases) between solid and liquid states. The most frequently utilized representative of these materials is 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5-CB). The main objective of this work is to enhance its functionality by the introduction of a photoresponsive diazenyl spacer and by a change of the non-chiral pentyl chain to various chiral units. The mesomorphic properties of the prepared materials is studied using polarizing optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. We have also studied photoresponse of their mesophases on illumination with UV-light (365 nm) using optical microscope. Furthermore, novel LC materials have exhibited mesophases at lower temperatures than previously reported analogous substances. A non-conventional photoresponse of the prepared materials is presented and discussed.
