Publikace, vycházející ze stejnojmenné konference, odráží ve 14 kapitolách z pera archeologů a historiků raného středověku současný stav odborné části mezioborové diskuse nad některými otázkami archeologického studia dotýkajícími se počátečního období vývoje centralizovaného mocenského útvaru na území Čech. Řadou příspěvků prolíná téma potenciálu konfrontace výpovědi archeologických a historických pramenů, jejich interpretačních limitů i nutnost stálého a kritického ověřování výpovědní hodnoty starších poznatků i hledání nových pramenných zdrojů. Porovnání řešených témat ve středoevropském prostoru nabízejí dvě studie polských kolegů.

The publication, based on the conference of the same name, reflects in 14 chapters by archaeologists and historians of the Early Middle Ages the current state of the professional part of the interdisciplinary discussion on some issues of archaeological study concerning the initial period of development of centralized power unit in the territory of Bohemia. A number of articles focuses on the topic of the potential of confrontation of the narrative of archaeological and historical sources, their interpretative limits and the need for constant and critical verification of the informative value of older knowledge and the search for new sources. Two studies by Polish colleagues offer a comparison of the topics addressed in Central Europe.
