Text se věnuje pobytu Josefa Mánesa v Mnichově v letech 1844–1847. S tímto pobytem bývají ve výkladu jeho malířské tvorby spojovány vstup do velkého uměleckého světa a seznámení s aktuální evropskou uměleckou scénou. Na druhou stranu se zdůrazňuje jeho odklon od internacionálních témat po návratu do Prahy. Současně historiografie přebírala stereotypní konstrukci představy o konfliktu mezi Mánesem a ředitelem pražské Akademie Rubenem jako důvodu jeho náhlého odchodu z Prahy. V obecnější rovině text sleduje konfrontaci pražské umělecké scény s mnichovskou na přelomu třicátých a čtyřicátých let 19. století. Na tomto pozadí se zabývá otázkou, jaký měla konfrontace s mnichovskou situací význam pro Mánesovu následnou tvorbu.

The text is dedicated to the sojourn of Josef Mánes in Munich between 1844 and 1847. In the interpretation of his painterly work this sojourn is usually connected with his entry to the world of grand art and becoming acquainted with the contemporary European art scene. Conversely, attention is also paid to his deviation from international themes after his return to Prague. At the same time historiography tended to accept the stereotyped construct of an imagined conflict between Mánes and the director of the Prague Academy Ruben as the reason for his sudden departure from Prague. At a more general level the text observes the confrontation between the art scenes in Prague and Munich at the turn of the 1830s and 1840s. Against the background of these events it examines the question of the significance of being confronted with the Munich situation for Mánes’s following work.
