This commentary highlights the importance of prezygotic reproductive isolation in diploid – polyploid plant complexes. In reaction to a recent paper by Castro et al. (2020), it mainly focuses at mechanisms of gametic competition (homoploid pollen precedence), a phenomenon with presumably great potential but still understudied in mixed-ploidy systems. Simultaneous and thorough evaluations of multiple reproductive barriers are encouraged due to often complex interactions among the particular barriers.
