Publikace Tváře války předkládá edici vybraných vzpomínek na dobu první světové války. Jejím základem je Databáze dějin všedního dne Historického ústavu Akademie věd České republiky, přičemž téma první světové války vykrystalizovalo jako výsledek prvotních rešerší uskutečněných v rámci této databáze. Editoři se snažili výběrem postihnout texty různé jazykové a literární úrovně, autory různých sociálních či věkových skupin a v neposlední řadě také obsáhnout co možná maximální množství prostředí a situací, s nimiž se mohli čeští účastníci první světové války setkat. Edice tedy obsahuje válečné vzpomínky devíti autorům kteří pocházeli z různorodého prostředí, sociálně, profesně i geograficky, jejich společným jmenovatelem však je to, že se snažili žít své životy v čase první světové války. Jejich výpovědi tak mají potenciál ukázat ony různé tváře Velké války, jakkoliv jistě ne všechny.

The book Faces of the war is an edition of selected memories concerning the period of World War I. The base of the edition is the Database of everyday history of the Historical Institute of the Czech Academy of Science. The topic of the World War is the result of the first research of this database. The editors tried to include a widest amount of environment and situations the Czech participants of Great War have to cope with. The edition consists of the memories of nine authors of varied origins - socially, professionally and geographically. Their common attribute was their efforts to live their lives during the World War I. Their testimonies have a certain potential to show the different faces of the Great war, althoug naturally not all of them.
