Článek je stručným portrétem Josefa (Joe) Hartmanna, významného cukrovarnického odborníka a vlivného oborového činovníka meziválečného Československa, jemuž se přezdívalo cukerní král. V počátcích své kariéry těžil z postavení svého otce a sňatku s dcerou bankéře Jaroslava Preisse, ale do vrcholných manažérských postů v rámci cukrovarnického oboru jej přivedla především jeho píle a povšechná erudice. Z cukrovarnické sekce koncernu Živnobanky postupně vybudoval lídra trhu a jeho schopností si cenil i stát, který zastupoval na mezinárodních fórech. Slibnou kariéru ukončila okupace Československa, během níž se zapojil do odbojové činnosti. Po roce 1945 se sice znovu zapojil do organizování československého cukrovarnictví, ale nástup komunistické moci jej donutil k emigraci, podobně jako řadu dalších prominentů první republiky.

The article gives a brief introduction of Josef (Joe) Hartmann, a prominent sugar refinery expert and influential departmental functionary of interwar Czechoslovakia, who was nicknamed the Sugar King. Early in his career he benefited from both his father’s position and his marriage to the daughter of banker Jaroslav Preiss, however, it was his diligence and general erudition that ensured his place among the sugar industry’s top management. The Živnobanka concern’s sugar refinery section gradually became the market leader under Hartman’s guidance, and in appreciation of his skills the state asked him to represent the Republic at international forums. His promising career ended with the occupation of Czechoslovakia, during which he joined the resistance forces. Returning after 1945, he was again involved in organising the Czechoslovak sugar industry, but the rise of Communism forced his emigration alongside many other influential people of the First Republic.
