Phototrophic microorganisms are both prokaryotic and eukaryotic, while fungi belong to the eukaryots. Phototrophs play an important role in soil as primary producers, having a unique ability to harvest light energy to produce organic matter. They are often important during the colonisation of new substrates. Fungi take part in many different processes including the decomposition of organic matter, the release of nutrients to plants, as well as humus formation. Both large groups of organisms are consumed by many soil invertebrates too.
