The paper reports on the Big Translation History panel of the 2019 European Society for Translation Studies Congress in Stellenbosch and includes a number of observations regarding the digital turn in translation history. The panel discussions focused on issues such as a clear-cut definition of Big Translation History, various scales of analysis, the need for a flexible periodization of the corpus, the manageability and feasibility of data collection and visualization as well as the relationship between qualitative and quantitative analysis. The observations suggest three key challenges researchers will need to focus on the nearest future: data quality, global technological imbalance, black-boxing of data processing.
