Marius Victorinus Conference 2017 was the first international conference devoted to the famous Roman rhetorician, philosopher and theologian of the mid-fourth century Marius Victorinus. The conference was attended by a number of prominent researchers on Marius Victorinus from Europe and the United States, such as John D. Turner, Stephen Cooper, Chiara O. Tomassi, Josef Lössl, Thomas Riesenweber, Lenka Karfíková and others. The presented papers endeavoured to capture the fascinating work of Marius Victorinus in its diversity and complexity. Part of the conference was devoted to Victorinus’ rhetorical writings, especially to his commentary on Cicero’s De inventione. Other papers addressed Victorinus’ theological works, his Hymns on the Trinity, and his commentaries on the Pauline epistles. Some of the contributions examined Victorinus’ theological writings in the context of his time and its doctrinal disputes, with careful attention to the complex links of his writings to Gnostic writings and to Platonist works of his time. Expanded revisions of papers given during the conference will be published in the volume: Stephen Cooper and Václav Němec, eds. Marius Victorinus: Pagan Rhetor, Platonist Philosopher, and Christian Theologian. Atlanta, GA: SBL Press, 2020, forthcoming.
