Hlavním cílem prací na Atlasu bylo shromáždit a shrnujícím způsobem v makroměřítku celé české kotliny kartograficky zobrazit základní údaje o všech dosud publikovaných pravěkých a raně středověkých hradištích v Čechách. O každém hradišti byly proto zaznamenány relevantní informace, ze kterých Atlas využívá tyto: název, poloha, katastrální území obce, okres, nadmořská výška, rozloha, míra jistoty zařazení naleziště k hradištím, provedení archeologického výzkumu, datování na několika úrovních, četnost osídlení v různých obdobích, zmínka v písemných pramenech a poloha v obecném rámci půdních typů, srážkových, teplotních a klimatických pásem. Tyto informace byly shromážděny z publikací a veřejně dostupných mapových podkladů, ojediněle z internetových stránek. Polohy hradišť v rámci půdních typů, teplotních, srážkových a klimatických pásem byly generovány z dat získaných digitalizací zveřejněných mapových podkladů pomocí GIS, zdroje informací jsou uvedeny u jednotlivých map a v seznamu lokalit. Ucelené kartografické zobrazení základních údajů o všech pravěkých a raně středověkých hradištích dosud nebylo zveřejněno nejen v Čechách, ale ve srovnatelném měřítku zřejmě ani jinde na evropském kontinentě. Nutno zdůraznit, že česká kotlina jako geografický celek skýtá ke sběru dat, pořizování soupisů lokalit a především jejich hodnocení a interpretování v evropském měřítku mimořádně příznivé podmínky. Autoři se zde mohou opřít o přirozené územní vymezení, které bylo nepochybně vnímáno i pravěkými a středověkými populacemi. Atlas se snaží vyplnit mezeru v bádání a poskytnout primární informace o hradištích nejen archeologům, ale i studentům historických oborů a všem zájemcům o dávnou minulost české země.

The main objective of the Atlas was to gather basic information about all prehistoric and early medieval hillforts in Bohemia published so far and depict it cartographically in a synoptic manner on the macro-scale of the Bohemian Basin. The following relevant information has therefore been recorded about each hillfort and used in the Atlas: name, position, municipality cadastral area, district, area, certainty of the site’s categorization as a hillfort, archaeological research, dating on several levels, frequency of occupation in various periods, mention in written sources and position within the general framework of soil types, precipitation, temperature and climatic zones. This information has been gathered from publications, publicly available map documents and, sporadically, from websites. The positions of the hillforts within the soil types, precipitation, temperature and climatic zones were generated from data acquired through the digitization of published map documents using GIS, the sources of information are listed with the individual maps and in the list of sites. No comprehensive cartographic depiction of basic information about all prehistoric and early medieval hillforts has been published yet, not only in Bohemia but on a comparable scale apparently anywhere else on the European continent, either. It needs to be emphasized that on the European scale, the Bohemian Basin as a geographical unit offers extraordinarily favourable conditions for data collection, the creation of lists of sites and, above all, their assessment and interpretation, as the authors can make use of a natural territorial delimitation that was undoubtedly perceived also by prehistoric and medieval populations. The Atlas endeavours to fill a gap in the research and provide primary information about hillforts not only to archaeologists but also to students of historical disciplines and to anyone who is interested in the ancient history of Bohemia.
