It is well established that properties of materials can highly depend on polycrystalline microstructure. By thermodynamically incorporating the excess energetic costs of the extra interface into the free energy functional of a phase field model, we study grain size distributions to uncover the structure-functionality relationship and to explore the microstructural design space for resolving the strength-functionality dilemma.
