Předkládaná krátká etuda nás přenáší do počátku třicátých let 15. století, v nichž se začalo v kulisách revoluční Prahy odehrávat neštěstí ještě neplnoletého pražského měšťana Janka Helma. Právě v úterý 13. července 1434 mu totiž jeho matka a bohatá pražská měšťanka Kateřina vybrala za poručníka významného husitského politika a svého „věrného přítele“ Jana Velvara. Stěžejní problém sirotka Janka Helma spočíval v nezkušenosti mládí, nedostatku konexí a především v lukrativním dědictví po otci, které zahrnovalo nejenom rodinný dům a další majetky ve městě, včetně výnosných Helmovských mlýnů na Poříčí. To bylo jistě lákavé sousto i pro pevnější „charaktery“, než kterými disponovali přední porevoluční pražští politici a posléze úhlavní političtí rivalové ve městě Jan Velvar a bratři Pešík a Jan z Kunvaldu. Na pozadí sporu o Helmovské dědictví lze ve třech vzájemně úzce propojených rovinách sledovat společenský, mocenský a politický vývoj ve městě.

This short etude brings us to the beginning of the thirties of the 15th century, in which the backdrop of the revolutionary Prague began to be affected by the unhappiness of the under-aged Prague Burghers Janek Helm. It was on Tuesday, July 13, 1434, that his mother and wealthy Prague burgher Kateřina selected him as the guardian of a prominent Hussite politician and his “faithful friend”, Jan Velvar. The crucial problem of Janka Helm’s orphan was the inexperience of youth, lack of connections and, above all, the lucrative heritage of his father, which included not only a family house and other property in the city, including the profitable Helm’s Mill in Poříčí. This was certainly a tempting bite even for stronger “characters” than the leading post-revolutionary Prague politicians and then the most important political rivals in the city of Jan Velvar and the brothers Pešík and Jan of Kunvald. Against the background of the dispute over Helm’s legacy, social, power and political developments in the city can be observed at three closely interrelated levels.
