The article is devoted to the origin and further development of phraseme used by Daniel Adam of Veleslavín (1546–1599) in Latin (“ab equis ad asinos”) and in Czech (“od oslů ke koním” [from horses to donkeys]) in his dictionaries (Dictionarium linguae Latinae dating back to 1579 and Sylva quadrilinguis dating back to 1598). Daniel Adam probably took this phrase from the work of Erasmus of Rotterdam (1466–1536). The meaning of the phraseme is: To go from good to bad, from higher attributes to lesser ones. We also deal with other Czech phrasemes containing lexemes “horse” [kůň] and “donkey” [osel], using historical and current handbooks of phraseology and dictionaries in this work.
