Předkládaný příspěvek se zaměřuje na možnosti uplatnění konceptu totalitarismu při analýze reálně existujících politických režimů. Navrhuje postup zohledňující kombinaci tři analytických úrovní (ideologie daného režimu, jeho záměry a realita jeho fungování) a přítomnosti, ať již reálné nebo potenciální, určitých charakteristických rysů či znaků obecně považovaných za atributy totalitárních politických systémů, na jejímž základě je možné konkrétní režimy charakterizovat jako totalitární či nikoli, přičemž důraz klade na roviny záměrů a reality. V závěru se soustředí na případovou studii Československa v letech 1963–1967, na kterou aplikuje výše nastíněnou metodu a dospívá k závěru, že se – navzdory jeho slábnutí – jednalo stále ještě o totalitární režim.

The present paper focuses on the possibilities of applying the concept of totalitarianism in the analysis of real-life political regimes. It proposes a process that takes into account the combination of three analytical levels (the ideology of the regime, its intentions and the reality of its functioning) and the presence, whether real or potential, of certain characteristics or features generally considered to be attributes of totalitarian political systems, on the basis of which it is possible to characterize particular regimes as totalitarian or not, with the emphasis on the analytical levels of regime intentions and reality of its functioning. Finally, this paper focuses on the case study of Czechoslovakia in the years 1963–1967, to which it applies the method outlined above and concludes that, despite its fading, the regime was still a totalitarian one.
