Bukov Underground Research Facility (Bukov URF) was built as a test site to assess the properties and behavior of the rock mass analogous to select candidate sites for high-level radioactive waste disposal. During gates driving evaluation of rock mass quality was conducted by Rock Mass Rating, Rock Tunneling Quality and Rock Quality Designation indexes according geological and geotechnical mapping of the gates walls, drilling of the exploration boreholes, rock testing in lab and in-situ measurements. Main goal of the study was rock mass quality evaluation for underground experiments. In some gates where the pilot boreholes were not drilled the structural geological mapping of the gate walls was carried out to determine the Rock Quality Designation index. This methodology was adopted in the past and later verified for this laboratory in similar rock mass conditions. Main goal of the study - selection of quasi-homogenous units of rock mass - was realized.
