Jednou z daností, s nimiž se civilizace od počátků vyrovnává, je zakotvení lidské společnosti v přírodních podmínkách. Ty utvářely evropskou kulturu a společnost a staly se významným zdrojem zdrojem inspirace pro literaturu, výtvarná umění a pro nauky od lékařství až po věštectví. Neméně důležité bylo, že představovaly pramen bohatství, ale zároveň i původ hrozeb, které mohly i zničit celé státy. Všechny tyto aspekty se během celých dějin promítaly i do fungování evropských států a jejich nazírání současníky i dnešními badateli. Prezentaci této problematiky považujeme za cenný příspěvek k diskusi o roli státu v evropských dějinách.

One of the factors civilization has been dealing with since its origins is the anchoring of human society in its natural conditions. They have shaped European culture and society and have become an important source of inspiration for literature, fine arts and science ranging from medicine to divination. No less importantly, they were a source of wealth, but also the origin of threats that could even destroy entire states. Throughout history, all these aspects have been reflected in the working of European states and their perception by contemporaries and today’s researchers. We consider the presentation of this issue a valuable contribution to the discussion on the role of the state in European history.
