The article examines the motif of the Romanesque rotunda, a simple building with a circular ground plan, in the drawings and paintings of Rudolfine painter Roelandt Savery. So far, scholars have only paid marginal attention to the occurrence of this picturesque motif in Savery’s oeuvre. In fact, some of the drawn examples can be identified very accurately as particular churches in Prague, and their presence in his paintings seems not random, but rather systematic, it is in line with the historical imagination constantly present in Netherlandish painting.
