In this article, the authors identify some of the legal and very often ethical problems that Czech publishing houses in exile faced, taking as examples two exile publishing houses, Index and 68Publishers, both of which were founded in autumn 1971, in Cologne by Bedřich Utitz and Adolf Müller and in Toronto by Zdena Salivarová and Josef Škvorecký respectively. The article is based on the mutual correspondence of Utitz, Salivarová, Müller and Škvorecký and on Škvorecký´s correspondence with his Czech friends.
