Cloud Electrification and Lightning Model (CELM) has been developed to explicitly model the electrification and lightning in thunderclouds. It is a model that is implemented in the 2- moment cloud microphysics of COSMO. CELM accounts for both the inductive and mainly the non-inductive charging mechanism. It explicitly models advection of charges bounded to six kinds of hydrometeors, changes in charge concentration caused by physical processes within cloud microphysics, ion concentration, and charge separation and transfer caused by collisions of hydrometeors. Since previous simulations of CELM using an idealized thundercloud showed a plausible charge structure in the cloud, we tested the model using real data. Specifically, we simulated three thunderstorm events of 2016 that were related to heavy precipitation and/or hail, and intense lightning activity. We also computed the Lightning Potential Index that has been developped for COSMO by the COSMO community.
